Lost in Translation
Coversation from tonight's session with my Korean partner.
Me: We're planning on throwing a Halloween party.
Korean Partner: Yeah?
Me: And I'm also planning a party in London though I'm not sure what kind yet. (side note to friends: I'm going to London from 11/8 to 11/21 to chill with G.O.P.I.)
Korean Partner: Wow. You're a real party whore.
Me: Excuse me?
Korean Partner: Party. Whore.
Me: (laugh) Where d'you pick up *that* expression? That's, like, serious American lingo.
Korean Partner: Whore?
Me: Who you been hanging out with?
Korean Partner: (takes out a pencil and writes down the expression)
Me: (I read it. It says: "party goer") Oh, 'goer'! (laugh)
Korean Partner: What?
Me: I thought you were saying "whore"! I thought you were calling me a 'ho!
Korean Partner: "Whore"? Can you write it down for me?
Me: (writes it down)
Korean Partner: (reads it) What's this mean?
Me: Whore. A prostitute.
Korean Partner: You thought I called you a prostitute?!
Me: It's okay. You called me a party whore. You can call your friends that.
Korean Partner: !
Me: No. It's an expression. Like if one of your friends has, like, a 100 pair of shoes, you can call her a 'shoe whore' or if she loves chocolate, you can call her a 'chocolate whore'. But only call your friends that. No one else.
Korean Partner: Okay...party whore.
Me: We're planning on throwing a Halloween party.
